Savannah Chamber of Commerce & Visit Savannah Release Official Statement on Proposed Convention Center Hotel

[SAVANNAH, Ga…] The Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce and Visit Savannah have issued their official position on the proposed Convention Center Hotel slated for Hutchinson Island.
Chamber/Visit Savannah staff have served on various committees and attended numerous meetings throughout project deliberations.

“Many agree that the Savannah region needs a convention hotel to take our meetings and convention business to the next level, however there are many differing opinions on how this hotel project should be funded,” said Bill Hubbard, President of the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce. “Historically, public governments have ‘incented’ existing major hotel projects by helping with infrastructure such as road, bulkhead, bridge and/or site work. However, it is important that these ‘incentives’ not create an economic imbalance and allow new projects to have a competitive advantage over the privately financed existing projects.”

After careful consideration, the executive committees of the Chamber and Visit Savannah approved the following position which was ratified by the Chamber Board on August 11:
“The Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce and Visit Savannah, support the Georgia International and Maritime Trade Center Authority board’s decision to seek a convention hotel adjacent to the Trade and Convention Center. Furthermore, we support public funding of infrastructure, but do not support public funding of any portion of the physical hotel facility itself. Additional meeting space, if publicly funded, should be in the form of an expansion of the existing Trade and Convention Center.”
