Last week, the University of Georgia’s School of Public & International Affairs hosted the Johnny Isakson Symposium on Political Civility. The Chamber’s Vice President for Governmental Affairs and longtime Senator Isakson staffer, Jared Downs, attended on behalf of the Chamber.

The symposium featured U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va) and former U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (R-Mo) as they discussed the benefits of political civility during extreme partisan times. Both Senators reflected on how Sen. Isakson was widely respected on Capitol Hill as a voice of reason and compromise

After retiring from Congress in 2019, Isakson founded the Isakson Initiative to raise awareness and funding for research related to neurological diseases. On Friday, Heath Garrett, who served as Isakson’s chief of staff, announced the initiative has raised more than $57 million.
