Earlier this fall, the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs Committee, under the guidance of the Chamber’s Executive Committee, formulated the Chamber’s 2018 Legislative Agenda. Three of the items on the agenda are:
- $35 million in bond funds for the ongoing Savannah Harbor Deepening Project
- $49.9 million in construction funding for the new engineering and research facility on Georgia Southern University’s Statesboro campus
- $2.7 million in equipment for the new Waters College of Health Professions facility on Georgia Southern’s Armstrong Campus
These three items were included in Governor Nathan Deal’s proposed state budget for fiscal year 2019.
The Chamber applauds Governor Deal for including these three important priorities in his proposed budget and commits itself to working with the members of both the Georgia House and Senate to insure that these items receive the funding requested by the Savannah Chamber and the governor.
The Chamber also continues to work with the Chatham County delegation to appropriate funds necessary to allow University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government to conduct a study to measure the feasibility of consolidating Chatham County’s Special Service District with an existing municipality within Chatham County. The purpose of the study would help identify the ideal way to reorganize the governments in the most efficient and effective manner.
