The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (Georgia EPD) approved permits for wells that will support Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) and related developments last week. This decision followed a rigorous analysis by the Georgia EPD assessing the impact these developments will have on the area’s water supply.
After examining all available data and input from the community, the Georgia EPD has determined that four wells can meet interim water needs while maintaining the integrity of the natural resources. Recognizing that new well developments can raise concerns among nearby residents, the company reassured the community that the Georgia EPD’s comprehensive analysis and the establishment of a mitigation fund reflect a commitment to protecting local homes and properties.
Officials are working to build confidence among residents regarding the thoroughness of the analysis and the measures being implemented. This effort aligns with the findings from a decade of site studies, which demonstrate sufficient water to support industry and agriculture while protecting the environment.
These permits are separate from the wetland permits currently under review by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). While the Georgia EPD permits pertain to the water supply for HMGMA and related developments, the USACE permits focus on the potential impact the metaplant may have on surrounding wetlands. USACE has requested additional information about the wells to aid in its assessment of the wetland permits, which have been provided, and a response from USACE is expected soon.
The $7.59 billion investment HMGMA will bring to the region and the creation of 8,500 well-paying jobs are expected to significantly impact the local economy. The company remains committed to working closely with the local community to ensure the area is developed responsibly and sustainably. For more information, visit TruthAboutWater.org.
