Resource Workshops Available to Fight Human Trafficking

On Saturday, January 28, the Savannah Interagency Diversity Council will present a full-day workshop to teach attendees how to recognize the signs of human trafficking and how to report it. Registration is required for the workshops. The workshops could be especially helpful to Chamber members who are required to post messaging in their bathrooms in order to help subjects of human trafficking get help.
In 2013, Governor Nathan Deal signed into law House Bill 141, which requires that all lodging properties and bars, among other types of businesses, post signs in bathrooms. The signs are designed to provide information to persons who are the subject of human trafficking to obtain help and services. Not posting the sign can have significant financial repercussions.

If you’d like to know more about what the required posting must contain, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has
a model notice on its website. Please note this is not the sign you have to post; this is a model for reference of what content must be included. If a business or establishment fails to comply with the law, law enforcement can take action which, upon subsequent offenses, could result in the business or establishment owner being fined up to $5,000. See below for more information on the Savannah Interagency Diversity Council’s workshop.

Date: Saturday, January 28
Time: Doors open 9 a.m., workshops from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Location: Savannah State University Student Union Ballroom
Registration: Registration is required ahead of time. Find out more at www.TheSIDC.org
