In a specially called meeting on Monday, Feb. 22, the Savannah City Council passed the police merger agreement with a 5-2 vote. On Friday, Feb. 26, the Chatham County Commission also passed the new merger agreement with an 8-1 vote.

Retaining the police merger between the City and the unincorporated area of Chatham County has been a long held priority for the Savannah business community. Though the specifics of the original merger document needed updating since its creation more than 10 years ago, abandoning the merger, creating two managements and separate staffs would likely be inefficient. 

The Chamber would like to thank our City Council and County Commission for reaching a resolution on this very important issue. The agreement is the result of many, many hard hours of negotiation and compromise, and we are proud to see our two governmental bodies working together to keep our police department together. Please thank Mayor DeLoach and Aldermen Foster, Durrence, Bell and Miller with the City, and Chairman Scott and Commissioners Stone, Holmes, Center, Farrell, Shabazz, Brady and Thomas with Chatham County.
