Visit Savannah Dumps Plastic Bags

In a move towards greater environmental consciousness, Visit Savannah will no longer use plastic bags in its gift shop at the Main Visitors Center on MLK, or for groups requesting a supply for convention registrations.

“Our destination services manager Laurie Humphries came to me with the suggestion that not only was eliminating plastic bags a idea good for the environment, but that many of our group and convention customers would be appreciative as well,” said Joseph Marinelli, president of Visit Savannah. “This was an easy one: listen to your fellow employees and listen to your customers.”

Laurie knows that convention groups are more environmentally conscious than ever before and minimizing plastic is a trend happening in convention destinations around the country, saying: “I’m not sure we can eliminate all plastic entirely, but we all have to do our part!”

Visit Savannah also no longer produces its board of directors’ reports and materials in a hand-out form, preferring instead to inform its board electronically via a cloud-based product called BoardPaq. Many of its publications are also available online in PDF format rather than printed and bound.
