Thank you to everyone who assisted in the successful campaign to promote the passage of both the Freeport Exemption and SPLOST 7 on the November 5 ballot! The Freeport Exemption passed with 58% of the vote and SPLOST received the overwhelming support of 68% of the vote. The Chamber will continue to monitor the SPLOST list and encourage the timely completion of the projects. For detail on the specific SPLOST project lists created by both the City of Savannah and Chatham County, please refer to the linked pages.
For the past 34 years, Chatham County has spent more than $1.8 billion in infrastructure and capital projects thanks to the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or SPLOST. In our opinion, SPLOST is a better way to generate capital funds than property tax increases, especially since visitors to our community contribute upwards of 40 percent of our sales tax collections.
We are not sure anyone agrees with all the projects on each SPLOST list. As lists are developed in the future, we encourage citizen input and close attention. We are encouraged that SPLOST 7 was more of a return to major infrastructure such as drainage, roads and recreation.
