Tybee Island, historically known as “Georgia’s Playground”, was incorporated in 1887. The island is the northernmost barrier island in Georgia and is approximately 15 miles east of Savannah. Rich in history, authenticity and collaboration, the town is successful in preserving community, commerce and culture to honor past, present and future generations.

In addition to the variety of amenities provided to residents and visitors, a vibrant historic downtown and other commercial areas are easily accessible and provide diverse shopping, dining, and service oriented businesses. Over 140 bricks and mortar businesses contribute to the economic base of the island year-round. Residents and visitors alike recognize the importance of supporting local businesses and merchants appreciate the support. Buying locally is important to maintaining a thriving community that is economically sound. Plus, your neighboring merchants appreciate your support. In true small town form, the city's Development Authority/Main Street Program offers a Locals Appreciation Card. Numerous merchants (PDF) honor the card by offering discounts and / or specials to cardholders. Cards are available to citizens with 31328 on their driver’s license and can be obtained in the Community Development Department’s Development Authority / Main Street Office.

Small Island. Big Picture.
Tybee Island has a total area of 5.2 miles - 3.7 of these miles is land and 1.4 miles is water.
As of 2010, the US Census reported that Tybee Island had approximately 3000 residents with a median age of 53, and 56% of households were considered family households.
Stories about the community are shared quite often. Starting in 2016, a video series of residents sharing stories began.
The video series is titled Local Lives and is an account of why residents choose Tybee as their hometown. These testimonials highlight aspects of the importance of preserving community and the sense of place only found here.
