Legislative Update

Last Monday, legislators returned to the gold dome for legislative day five and worked through Thursday, January 26, completing days 5 through 8 of the 40-day Session.

Governor Kemp gave his State of the State address during a joint session of the House and Senate on January 25 (legislative day 7). The Governor highlighted several components of his FY 2024 proposed spending plan, including $1 billion in income tax rebates to Georgians. The proposed spending plan also includes $1.1 billion in property tax grants, fully funding the state’s K-12 education system, HOPE Scholarship, Grant programs, and a pay raise for teachers and state employees. $35 million for rural Georgia workforce housing is also included in the FY2024 proposed spending plan

Governor Kemp touted his administration’s continued success in securing unprecedented economic development projects across the State, resulting in $13 billion in investments and 17,000 new jobs, with 85% of those projects outside metro Atlanta. While highlighting economic prosperity and job growth in the State, he acknowledged skilled labor shortages and lack of workforce housing as some of the most significant challenges facing our economy.
