Savannah Welcomes Sport Related Travel Back to Savannah this Weekend

This weekend, Savannah and Chatham County will welcome two sporting events to our community as we continue to see a return of business, conventions, meetings, and sports related travel. Please help us welcome the 2021 AAU Gymnastic National Championships and the Top Gun Sports Southeastern Summer World Series. Led by a strong bounce-back in leisure visitation since earlier this year, Chatham County is pacing better than most of the rest of the country in terms of important tourism-related numbers like lodging occupancy and hotel/motel tax collections. And as we see the gradual return of group business, we are fortunate to attract sports-related events that fill rooms and keep restaurants, retail shops and tours and attractions busy – especially as we head into the hotter summer months.

The 2021 AAU Gymnastics National Championship will attract over 2,300 gymnasts and their families to the Savannah Convention Center and fill rooms in the Historic District, Southside, Airport-area, Midtown, and Tybee Island. This event was originally planned for Orlando’s Disney World, but moved to Savannah because of COVID uncertainty and a long-lasting relationship with the same event producers that bring the Courtney Kupets Pink Gymnastics event here every March.

The Top Gun Sports Southeastern Summer World Series taking place in the Pooler area attracts 50 teams, and their families from six regional states and will fill rooms in Pooler and the near the Airport. This organization produces 10-12 other events in the Savannah area annually.

Please be on the lookout for these family-friendly events and share our Southern hospitality with them.
